Printmaking Exhibition at Atwell Gallery
If you are in Perth (Western Australia) this exhibition opens at Atwell Gallery Canning Highway Alfred Cove near the North Lake Road Lights.
It has around 70 examples of printmaking, below are the two I will have in the exhibition which opens tomorrow afternoon.
This one is titled Sailing to Byzantium, from the W B Yeats Poem of the same name.
That is no country for old men. The young
In one another’s arms, birds in the trees,
—Those dying generations—at their song,
The salmon-falls, the mackerel-crowded seas,
Fish, flesh, or fowl, commend all summer long
Whatever is begotten, born, and dies.
Caught in that sensual music all neglect
Monuments of unageing intellect.
An aged man is but a paltry thing,
A tattered coat upon a stick, unless
Soul clap its hands and sing, and louder sing
For every tatter in its mortal dress,
Nor is there singing school but studying
Monuments of its own magnificence;
And therefore I have sailed the seas and come
To the holy city of Byzantium.
So far I have made two images from this poem but every single line is an image. You can see the old man from the poem in the centre and his soul behind him singing.
This is the Second image I will have on display – The Chimes at Midnight. From the same series inspired by the Conversations with Ghosts Concert by Paul Kelly James Ledger and 10 Classical musicians.

This drypoint was inspired by one of the Songs of the same name written by Paul Kelly. One of the lines from the song says “I thought I heard her say we are the ghosts” I don’t know what the intention behind this song was but what I gained from it was very much about relationships. The depth of knowing another intimately and how in that space emotions are shared. Also it had a distinctly other world feeling dreams, ghosts, a movement between spirit and the physical. So this is the image I came up with in response.
These two images are both available framed and unframed. $380 framed and $280 unframed. email me for more information or leave comments below. Might see you at the opening tomorrow. see more from this series on my website. https://shanajames.com/drypoint-prints/
