I have created this online drawing course, during the Covid-19 pandemic. Many people have lost their jobs, myself included, so I have decided to make payment for the course by donation. If you are unwaged or in financial difficulty the course is free, however if you do still have an income please donate whatever you think the course is worth to you.
The Course Outline
Drawing Focus with Shana James – Season One: The Quarantine Edition
This course is designed in 3 parts each one consisting of 4 episodes. Each part is self contained but it is best to complete them in order. The episodes will be prerecorded on YouTube so you can access them any time and re-watch them if you wish.
Part 1: Drawing in the Kitchen (4 episodes)
Part 2: Nature as a Designer (4 episodes)
Part 3: Patterns Fabrics and Folds (4 episodes)
Once you sign up I will email you the You Tube links. You will receive a new link each week. I will also email you the link to a private Facebook page where people can upload the drawings they have done and get feedback from other participants. You can post any questions and I will answer them, I think it will be a very motivating group. Each episode will be structured with some basic skills, followed by the project and then some ideas for extending if you have more time or would like to practice every day to build the skill.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need any drawing or art experience?
No! If you have never done a drawing before this is a great time to start. Absolute beginners are very welcome in this online course. If you have done a bit of drawing before, this is a great time to get back into it and I’m sure you will get a lot out of the step by step instruction. If you are a talented drawer or a professional artist you may also find this course useful on terms of providing some structure, you can skip over the part of the lesson showing technique and just do the projects.
What does it cost?
As it says in the first paragraph payment is by donation, if you are unwaged or in financial difficulty the course is free.
What materials will I need?
Minimum requirements a HB or 2B pencil an eraser and paper (photocopy or printer paper will do).
If you would like to have a better range of materials:
- 2B lead pencil
- 4B lead pencil
- 6B lead pencil
- A sketch book or drawing book ideally A4 or A3 but other sizes are fine if you prefer something smaller or larger

The Benefits of Drawing
During this time of social isolation you may find you have more time on your hands, because you are no longer working or if you are still working you may have extra time because you can’t go out. Once you’ve eaten more than you wanted to, and watched more Netflix than you ever thought you would, you may like to try drawing. It focuses your mind, stops the internal chatter and it’s satisfying when you see yourself improve.
For some people, who are looking after children, you may find that you have even less time. This course will be really good for you too. Drawing gives you a mental break from everything else. You are completely focused doing something for yourself. If your kids are interested they can do it too, but don’t force them to join you, it could be a much needed break from each other.
