This most recent body of work entitled Understanding Alice, draws imagery from Lewis Carroll’s Famous Alice in Wonderland and reinterprets the story, using elements as metaphors for navigating contemporary life.
Many readers would have made a linocut in high school.
Some, may have taken one of my printmaking classes at the Fremantle Arts Centre. Carving the linoleum is a satisfying feeling where you are really making something physical, it’s a sensation many of us crave in this digital world. The carved lino is a kind of sophisticated stamp which is rolled up with ink and printed onto paper. Alice is taken to a new place with these linocuts.
Some of the works take their titles from the story as in “Alice had Great Difficulty Managing her Flamingo”. Here the personification of the flamingo, and the use of it to represent all that is difficult to manage in life makes an image which many will relate to.
The open studio is becoming the new gallery in a time when many commercial galleries have closed artists are now finding new ways to connect with those interested in art. And the general public get a glimpse into the making and the ideas behind the work a chat with artist over a cup of tea or coffee, I think it is a great way to see art and perhaps pick up a bargain.
